Local Activities

The Beach & Marina

Calheta Beach & Marina is a short 5 minute drive from Casa Vista do Ledo and boasts not one but 2 lovely man-made golden sand beaches. The sand was especially imported both from Figueira da Foz in Portugal and Morocco. The beach is extremely popular with Madeirans, as it is probably the best beach on the Island. A long breakwater protects both the sand and the swimmer, making it a really safe place to swim, especially as there are life guards on duty during the bathing season.

The beach and Marina area offers plenty of sports activities to, from water sport rentals to beach Volleyball. There are also 2 snack bars on the beach and several very good restaurants in the Marina.

Paragliding

Paragliding has become quite famous in Madeira because of the fabulous views and beautiful locations. One of the great locations for this sport is Arco da Calheta - 10mins from Casa Vista do Ledo - because of itís frequent good flying conditions all year round. There are two very experienced paragliding clubs in Madeira - Aeroclube of Madeira and Madeira Paragliding Hang Gliding Association. These two clubs organise the Paragliding events and competitions on the island.

Diving

If you enjoy diving, Madeira is a great place to go, with itís diverse variety of species found around the island - from seahorses and Manta Rays to Morays and Grouper. The sea is known for itís all year round mild temperatures, clear waters and excellent visibility. There are also several nature reserves around the coast to protect the sea life.

A great place to go diving is off the coast of the small village of Madelena do Mar which is 10mins - 15mins drive from Casa Vista do Ledo.

Walking

Madeira is considered to be one of the best places in the world for walking, hiking and trekking. Our lovely volcanic island offers amazing views, fabulous waterfalls and steep green valleys. There is a walking festival in January which is 5 days long and takes in 20 of the best and most popular walks; some of which are situated near Casa Vista do Ledo. Levada walks are considered the most popular - Levadas are man-made water channels designed to carry the excess rainfall to the agricultural lands. Experience the walks for yourself with guidance from our local taxi driver or contact one of the many walking clubs in Madeira.
